Malaysia comprises three major cultures, Malay, Chinese and Indian. Each of these cultures has their own traditional clothing which has evolved over the years but has kept to many aspects of their identity. The different states in Malaysia again reflect differences in the traditional costume. The Malay women wear the baju kurung and baju kebaya for most occasions while Malay men wear the baju Melayu. The Chinese wear the cheongsam, which is particularly popular during Chinese New Year and formal gatherings. The Indian community wears saris and Punjabi suits. The men typically would not dress in their traditional costumes except for formal occasions.
